When developer Abbot Kinney built Venice of America in 1905, he dug a network of canals inspired by the Italian original. Most were later filled in to make roads, but a handful of canals south of Venice Boulevard survive.
Today they're lined with homes of every style, from tiny cottages to striking modern houses, each with its own little garden and dock along the water.
Early morning is magical here. The water is still, ducks drift under the arched footbridges and the only sound is the occasional neighbor watering plants.
It's a residential neighborhood, so walk quietly, stay on the public paths and enjoy the gardens without wandering onto private property.
Afterward, it's a short walk to the beach or up to Abbot Kinney Boulevard for coffee and a look at the shops.
